A Green Oasis amidst Nordmøre’s Natural Scenery
Svinviks arboret (the museum arboretum) is a historic plant collection with roots spanning three centuries. Halvor Svinvik (1894–1976) developed a deep interest in plants during his childhood on the Svinvika farm. Together with his wife, Anne Reitan Svinvik (1906–1993), he laid the foundations for what is today Svinviks arboret.
The property “Gjengsto” in Svinvika became both their home and a working farm, while their passion for plants gradually filled large parts of the estate with species collected from many corners of the world.
Located directly on the Todalsfjord, the arboretum benefits from natural conditions that allow both common and rare species to thrive in a Norwegian climate. Conifers were one of Halvor Svinvik’s great passions and form an important part of the historic collection. Rhododendrons are another hallmark of the arboretum, and their early summer flowering has become a signature experience that many visitors look forward to each year.
Together with the historic orchard, the old perennials and the great variety of deciduous trees, the collection is significant both culturally and genetically — and a delight for plant enthusiasts. Monkey puzzle trees, coast redwoods, bamboo, magnolias, and hundreds of rhododendron varieties are just some of what you can encounter. Walking among — and beneath — these extraordinary plants along magical pathways is a memorable experience for the whole family.
Practical Information
Please note that parts of the plant collection are situated in uneven terrain and can only be reached by using stairs and narrow paths. Other areas of the garden are more accessible and can be reached via a relatively broad gravel road. If you are unsure about accessibility, feel free to contact us — we are happy to answer any questions.
You can visit the summer café without purchasing a ticket to the garden and plant collection, and enjoy a pleasant coffee break in beautiful surroundings. The café serves a simple selection of homemade cakes, locally baked goods, ice cream, and both hot and cold drinks.
Please remember that the garden and plant collection are outdoor attractions, and your experience will be best if you dress according to local weather conditions.
