A Pearl on the Outer Coast
Sanden belonged to the Eckhoff family from 1795 until 1984, when Smøla museum purchased the property. Anders and Berndine Eckhoff, who married in 1875, lived in the house with their nine children. Six of the children emigrated to America, while only three remained in Norway. Astrid and her brother Karl Johan lived at Sanden all their lives. They had another brother who also settled at Veiholmen. Today, all the buildings at Sanden stand exactly as Astrid left them when she passed away in 1983.
The interior of the main house is authentic and reflects the wide connections that those who lived here maintained both within Norway and abroad. The main house, the warf warehouse, the cowshed, the storehouse and the boathouse are all preserved as they were when the family lived here.
