The History of Education
In 1827, a new Education Act was introduced, stipulating that permanent schools—so-called “common schools”—were to be built in rural areas. Permanent schools were to be established at all main churches, and itinerant schools were to operate in every parish. In addition, teacher training was to be strengthened, and self-taught schoolmasters were to be replaced by teachers educated at teacher training colleges.
Smøla was one of many communities granted a postponement, but after the requirements were tightened under the new Education Act of 1860, there was no alternative but to comply.
