When Moldstad Research Farm was closed on 1 January 1995, it marked the end of an era of investment in peatland cultivation and land settlement in Norway. The research farm at Mære, the companies Ny Jord and Det norske Myrselskap had already been closed down or merged out of existence. Strong voices within the field argued that Moldstad should become a museum. The aim was to present knowledge about peatland cultivation and to tell the story of organised land reclamation and settlement in Norway.

History of Land Reclamation and Settlement

The peatland museum has a national perspective, while also focusing on the work carried out at the research farm on Frostadheia, which was an important national centre for land reclamation and settlement and peatland research. The museum collaborates with regional and national professional communities within contemporary peatland research and agriculture.
