An Active Heritage Site
The residential building, constructed towards the end of the 19th century, housed the owners of the shipyard and their families. Many children grew up here on the site. On the lower floors, there
is a spar workshop where masts and other rigid parts of the rigging were shaped. The line shaft loft and carpentry workshop are located on the same floor as the owner’s office and the canteen for the shipwrights.
There is still regular activity at Mellemværftet throughout the year, and our craftsmen and slip master, together with members of Norsk Forening for Fartøyvern (the Norwegian Ship Preservation Association), ensure that the shipyard is full of life at all times. We also organise blacksmithing courses for those who wish to learn more about traditional crafts.
In 2018, Mellemværftet was listed by Riksantikvaren (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage). The purpose of this designation is to preserve Mellemværftet as an architectural, cultural and industrial-historical representation of a 19th-century shipyard. More information about Mellemværftet as a heritage site can be found on the Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s website.
