Coastal Museum – School Museum – Local Heritage Museum
Before the summer of 2023, the museum acquired a new building for its collection: Vebenstad School from 1910. School life has changed greatly since then, and this gives us an opportunity to look back into our recent past.
The area where the museum is located, the Kvernes cultural landscape, is Averøy municipality’s Millennium Site. In 2018, Kvernes was also given status as one of several key locations along the Coastal Pilgrim Route – the pilgrimage route that runs along the west coast northwards to Nidaros. More information about the Coastal Pilgrim Route can be found elsewhere. Kvernes Stave Church – our nearest neighbour – is managed by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments (Fortidsminneforeningen), and many visitors choose to combine a visit to the museum with a visit to the church.
The museum offers activities throughout the year, with local food traditions, crafts and local history as key themes. The Church Trail Walk in May and the Olsok Festival during the last weekend of July are popular events. Here you can enjoy a chat and eat your fill of traditional Nordmøre food. The museum also has an active volunteer community that meets regularly.
During the summer season (mid‑June to mid‑August), the museum has regular opening hours. At other times of the year, the museum is open to pre‑booked groups throughout the year.
