A Rich Diversity of History
A large part of the museum consists of its building collection, showcasing different types of traditional local architecture. The museum has two listed buildings: a smoke‑oven cottage and a traditional storehouse on stilts with two timber sections. Inside the main buildings, you will find small, themed exhibitions on local historical topics and various crafts.
Åsen also has a unique history as a municipal care home from 1910 until the early 1970s. This was the precursor to today’s nursing homes and one of the few public facilities for those in need of care in our recent past. During this period, the farm was leased out, supplying the institution’s large kitchen, while residents of the care home participated in farm work according to their abilities.
The museum provides insight into the different eras of Åsen’s history, and the exhibitions and collections reflect various aspects of society, both locally and regionally, through time.
The museum offers guided tours for pre-booked groups, in addition to public events announced under “What’s On?”
Explore the Museum Independently
Please note that the museum grounds are always open, even when the exhibitions are closed. The museum uses the Kulturpunkt app, which can be downloaded free of charge. Through the app, you can easily access text, images, and additional information about the museum buildings using QR codes. The content can also be accessed without the app, as long as your phone can scan QR codes.
Schools and Nursery Schools
The museum offers educational programmes for nursery schools and formal schools during the spring and autumn terms. All bookable school programmes will be available in the overview of educational offerings from Nordmørsmusea on the website during spring 2026.
More Experiences in the Area: Kavlvegen Cultural Trail – A Walk with Historical Roots
Adjacent to Åsen bygdemuseum is the Kavlvegen Cultural Trail, starting at the museum. In the same area as the trail lies a kavlveg dated to the 1160s. By constructing a wooden path over the bog, people could travel easily even in very wet conditions, and this technique is continued along parts of the trail. One section of the new path is a reconstruction of the original wooden walkway preserved in the bog, while other parts of the trail consist of a simplified and modernised version, along with gravel paths.
Parking for the trail can be found at the museum entrance and at designated areas near the barn. Disabled parking and access to the Kavlvegen cultural trail are available from Galtmettet, along county road (FV) 670, approximately 1 km from Åsen bygdemuseum towards Skei.
